When I first came across this rendition of heavenly sky’s, it stopped me in my tracks. The Artist truly nailed what I consider the essence of love in its most natural and honest state. I love that about ART that it truly means something different to everyone that might gaze at its purpose for creation..

In my eyes, it speaks to how love has color but color-blind, it has depth but timeless, it has momentum but stead-fast, it can be stifling, but gives life, it’s structured but effortless, it can be simplistic but also multi-faceted like a diamond 💎

This is a tribute to one of my favorite movies, on the eve of the 23rd Anniversary of its release in the movie theatre’s- Love Jones. It’s just a simple story about two people, their messy relationship and their opinionated friends, all set against the backdrop of Chicago’s dark and bluesy poetry scene on the East side. It’s about a time of Renaissance and discovery and a much simpler threshold of understanding of what in life speaks to your heart, and what you are willing to do to achieve it, by going for the intimidating, non-conforming and uncomfortable path, in order to grasp a positive avenue in life that you yearn for.

The Chicago Black Renaissance is the name given to the surge of artistic expression, community organizing, and social activity in Chicago’s African-American community during the 1930s through the 1950s, and which figured prominently in the years leading to the modern Civil Rights movement of the 1960s. This manifested a movement in black culture with spoken word and majestic unapologetic thoughts of expression.

What other film is giving you iconic and chaotic lines like “I’m the blues in your left thigh trying to become the funk in your right”?

Love Jones truly has purposeful meaning to me in the tumultuous caldron of life’s ups and downs, landscaped by determination and fortitude to succeed and follow one’s path. Passionate and thought provoking, which made sense for a film about a relationship between a Poet and a Photographer.

It is the color of light, the shape of sound high in the evergreens.
It lies suspended in hills, a blue line in a red sky- I’m looking at SOUND
I am hearing the brightness of high bluffs and almond trees
I am tasting the wilderness of lakes, rivers and streams, caught in an angle of song.
I am remembering water that glows in the dawn
The motion tumbled in earth Life hidden in mounds.
I am dancing a bright beam of life
I am remembering
❤️LOVE❤️
-Nina Mosely {Nia Long §§ Love Jones}

What resonates with me in this movie is the symbolism and layers of freedom that can be released when life’s inhibitions are judged and discarded to the wind. This movie honestly has so many hidden gems of profound meaning and depth, that I still find myself realizing something I missed prior. I believe I have seen this movie at least 50 time’s and embarrassed that I can recite parts of the movie in verbatim.
